Blink of an Eye

Last week was crazy with the start of my intensive Spanish classes, my seemingly futile battle with sleep, and then a spontaneous purchase to attend San Diego Comic Con Malaga last Friday. I have a lot of thoughts that aren’t fully flushed out and a friend is in town visiting for a few days. So here’s a poem I wrote on one of my trips to Malaga.

Blink of an Eye

By Ahza Rex

To the waiter at Restaurante

El Jardin 1887 in Malaga

There are a few people

Who can look you directly—

A sparkle in the eye.

With a smile—

A gentle hand

Resting on your shoulder—

And somehow—

In the blink of an eye—

You belong.

Suddenly—

Frighteningly—

Realize—

How long it’s been

To be seen.

As I watched him

Escort the old woman,

In a wheelchair,

Outside the restaurant

Waving—

Enthusiastically—

“Adios—

Goodbye.”

As I left,

He gave me a hug,

A lingering touch,

His hand holding my arm—

“Come back,”

He said,

For a party,

In two days,

A light squeeze

And a good bye.

I realized later,

This—this seeing—

Is what he loves.

So lost in his eyes,

I couldn’t tell you his face—

I didn’t even get his name.
