Dine With the Gods Tonight

As I was making my way along the trails, I could almost see me—as a little boy running along the trail and disappearing in the brush. (Hiawassee, April, 2024)

This is a song I started singing as I was climbing mountains on the Appalachian Trail.

I only had the chorus and beat at the time and this weekend, I took the time to write out some lyrics.

Work in progress along with a violin accompaniment.

Dine With the Gods Tonight

By Ahza Rex

We’re goin’ up the mountain side

To dine with the Gods tonight.

We’ve said goodbye to our wives—fair maiden’s light.

Cuz we’re goin’ up the mountain side.

Ov’r the valleys and bright streams,

To cross the plains and the great divide

We’re going to the other side.

We know our destiny tonight,

Is to dine with the gods tonight.

We’ll feast with the mighty Thor—

A hammer at his side.

The clever Loki swoops and jests,

As he bows,

‘Welcome to the other side.’

We gaze upon—

Fairest of maidens—Frigg,

Gaia—

All-Mother, great Lover, Creator and Holder—

Of our sweet destiny.

Raising our pints of nectar sweet

To the great one-eyed Raven King,

Adorned with a crown of fragrant flowers

Great antlers hang upon thee—

Who hung three nights from the tree of life—

A spear in his side—

Yes—

To make us wise—

A gift so divine—

The wolves and the deer,

Dance at his side—

Yes—

We drink to the Raven King.

Yes, we march on—to the mountain side

To dine with the gods tonight.

Yes, there is much fear in our quivering hearts

But Valhalla awaits

And the Valkyrie cry—

“Whose cups shall overflow

With the drink of the gods—

Tonight?”

To protect the Tree of Life,

In all its divine might.

So we’ll dine tonight with the gods up above.

We give our thanks and pray,

Our lives we have received—

Protect our kin—

Keep these lands plenty—

We don’t need much more than this.

Than to live lives well in the bosom of our loves—

What a life well lived.

Feet planted down as we listen to the land

And the sound of the beating drums.

We march on through

Dark, murky lands,

Across the sky—star bust night.

Our sword at our hips,

And our shields by our side,

We await the gods tonight.

Let the Valkyries sing their song of war

Take us up to Valhalla’s feast,

Claiming our great prize,

Where we’ll dine with the gods tonight.

Yes—

We’re goin’ up the mountain side

To dine with the Gods tonight.

We’ve said goodbye to our wives—fair maiden’s light.

Cuz we’re goin’ up the mountain side.

Ov’r the valleys and bright streams,

To cross the plains and the great divide

We’re going to the other side.
